The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said on Friday it will not approve a gel capsule in a liquid form for the first time, but it may be used for other purposes.
The new jelly, which is called Viagra, is designed to act quickly, unlike tablets that can take a few hours to work.
The FDA said it was reviewing the application, which was being submitted to it by Pfizer Inc. and the makers of the Viagra drug.
“We are very disappointed with the response from the manufacturers,” said Janet Woodcock, a University of Missouri medical researchers. “We are concerned that the new formulation could increase the risk of blood clots and the development of new drug-resistant bacteria.”
A similar application had been filed for a liquid form of the drug, Pfizer’s Cialis.
Pfizer, which makes Viagra, said it would respond to the agency’s review and move forward with its clinical trials and regulatory approval of the drug. The FDA, however, rejected the application.
The agency said the company has agreed to a trial, and it will conduct a third round of clinical trial testing.
The FDA said the new jelly is designed for oral use, not for administration to patients.
“We are troubled by the apparent delay in approval,” said FDA spokesman Mary Lou Marzian.
Pfizer said the company’s website does not disclose the price of the gel.
